Iron deficiency anemia

Definition


        Anemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells provide oxygen to body tissues. Iron deficiency anemia is a decrease in the number of red cells in the blood caused by too little iron.

 

Causes

  • Blood loss(including from heavy menstrual bleeding) 
  • Poor absorption of iron by the body 
  • Too little iron in the diet

Symptoms

  1. Brittle nails
  2. Blue color to whites of the eyes
  3. Fatigue
  4. Headache
  5. Irritability
  6. Pale skin color
  7. Shortness of breath
  8. Sore tongue
  9. Weakness
  10. Decreased appetite(ecspecially in children)  
Treatment 
 Eat iron rich foods examples:

  • Eggs (yolk)
  • Fish
  • Peas and beans
  • Meats(liver is the highest source)
  • Raisins
  • Whole-grain bread
